All levels of society regardless of age, gender, sexuality, race, and socio-economic background are affected by domestic abuse. It exists in many forms which includes psychological, emotional, sexual and financial abuse. It also includes coercive control.
Domestic abuse is not always physical. It can include controlling behaviour which can make a person feel like they are dependent on their abuser by feeling isolated from support, exploited, and deprived of independence. This is known as coercive control which is an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim.

Sadly, domestic abuse is more common than you think and should never be tolerated. We can, in some circumstances, obtain from the Court an injunction to protect you and any children that may be at risk.
There are two types of injunction:
- Non-molestation order
A non-molestation order prohibits your abuser from using or threatening violence against you or your children, or intimidating, harassing or pestering you. It can contain very specific provisions depending on the particular type of abuse that you have suffered.
- Occupation order
An occupation order sets out who can live in the family home (or certain parts of it) and can also restrict someone from entering the area surrounding a home. An occupation order does not affect each person’s financial interest in the home, simply who can live in it.
Legal Aid is still available for these matters. We only deal with private matters. If you wish to check your eligibility for legal aid please click the following link.
